What Each Wave Symbol Means

Tilde Operator (U+223C)

The tilde operator is the most common wave symbol. In mathematics, it means "is similar to" or "varies as." In everyday text, people use it to add a playful tone — like writing "Hey~" with a wavy feel. Not to be confused with the regular tilde (~) on your keyboard, which is U+007E.

Sine Wave (U+223F)

This one looks exactly like a sine wave from math class. It represents an alternating current or oscillating signal. You will see it in physics and electrical engineering textbooks. Rare in everyday use, but perfect if you want something that looks genuinely wavy rather than just tilde-ish.

Triple Tilde (U+224B)

Three wavy lines stacked together. In mathematics, it means "alliance" or "is equivalent to." Visually, it is the most intense wave symbol available. People use it decoratively in usernames and social media bios when they want maximum waviness.

Almost Equal To (U+2248)

Two wavy lines. In math, it means "approximately equal to." You have probably seen it in science class. Outside of math, people use it to mean "roughly" or "close to" in informal writing.

Water Wave Emoji (U+1F30A)

The classic ocean wave emoji. Used for anything related to the beach, surfing, swimming, or just good vibes. One of the most popular nature emojis. It is not a text symbol — it renders as a colorful image on most devices.

Wavy Dash (U+3030)

A long, wavy horizontal dash. Originally from Japanese typography where it connects terms with a wavy flowing meaning. In informal use, it works as a decorative separator or a wavy alternative to a regular dash.

Tilde vs Wave Symbol

The tilde (~) on your keyboard and the wave symbols above look similar but are technically different characters. The keyboard tilde (U+007E) is an ASCII character. The mathematical wave symbols are from different Unicode blocks and have distinct meanings in formal contexts. In casual use, they are interchangeable — but if you need the exact mathematical symbol, copy it from above rather than using the keyboard tilde.
