25 Underrated Emojis You Should Be Using More Often

We all have our go-to emojis. The crying-laughing face. The thumbs up. The heart. Maybe the skull if you are feeling dramatic. But there are literally thousands of emojis sitting on your keyboard that never get touched, and some of them are genuinely great.

I went through my recent text messages and realized I use maybe 15 emojis on a regular basis. Out of over 3,600 available ones. That is less than half a percent. So I dug through the full emoji list and found 25 that deserve way more attention than they get.

🗿 Moyai (Moai Statue)

This one has been around forever but most people outside of meme culture skip right past it. The moyai face — modeled after the Easter Island statues — has become the universal symbol for deadpan humor. When someone says something so absurd you have no reaction, just drop a 🗿 and move on. No words needed.

It works especially well when someone sends you a terrible pun. Or tells you something that is simultaneously true and ridiculous. The stone face says it all.

🫠 Melting Face

Added in 2022 and still criminally underused. The melting face captures that feeling when you are overwhelmed, embarrassed, or just completely done with a situation. It says "I am literally dissolving from this."

Hot take: this is more expressive than the regular smiley face. A smiley is generic. A melting face tells a story. You are okay, but barely. You are smiling through the chaos. That is a mood.

🤌 Pinched Fingers

The Italian hand gesture emoji. If you have never used this, you are missing out. It works for so many situations — "what are you talking about?", "that food was perfect", or just general emphasis on a point you are making.

I started using this ironically and now I genuinely cannot stop. It adds flavor to any message. Pair it with food talk and it hits different.

🫡 Saluting Face

When someone gives you a task and you want to acknowledge it without typing a full response, the salute is perfect. It says "understood, I am on it" without being as boring as a thumbs up.

Also great for when someone shares genuinely impressive news. A subtle "I respect that" without gushing.

🦦 Otter

There are dozens of animal emojis that nobody uses. But the otter stands out because — and this is objectively true — otters are adorable. Send this when something cute happens. Or when you just want to make someone smile for no reason.

Pro tip: an otter emoji in a text message gets a response roughly 100% of the time. People cannot ignore it. They have to acknowledge the otter.

🏴‍☠️ Pirate Flag

Why is nobody using the pirate flag? It is right there. Perfect for when you are being mischievous, doing something you probably should not, or just feeling chaotic energy. "Skipping work today 🏴‍☠️" hits way harder than any other emoji in that context.

🫥 Dotted Line Face

This one represents feeling invisible or disappearing. When you want to ghost out of a conversation gracefully, or when someone ignores your text for hours and you want to express how seen you feel (hint: not very), the dotted line face is your answer.

Underrated for group chat situations where you say something and nobody responds. Just drop a 🫥 an hour later.

🪬 Hamsa (Hand of Fatima)

A beautiful symbol that represents protection against the evil eye. Whether you believe in its spiritual meaning or just think it looks cool, the hamsa emoji adds a mystical vibe to messages. Use it when you need good luck, protection, or just want to ward off bad energy.

🧿 Nazar Amulet

Speaking of the evil eye — this blue eye amulet is common in Turkish and Greek culture. It shows up all over jewelry and home decor in real life but almost never in text messages. Why? It is pretty, it has meaning, and it pairs well with protective or spiritual messages.

🫶 Heart Hands

This was added relatively recently and it deserves to replace the regular heart in half your messages. It feels more personal than ❤️ because it implies the sender is making the heart with their own hands. Small distinction, bigger emotional impact.

There are so many flower emojis and everyone just uses the rose. The hyacinth is gorgeous and different. Send it instead of a rose sometime and watch the reaction. People notice when you put thought into your emoji choice.

🫧 Bubbles

Whimsical and playful. Works for bath time references, daydreaming vibes, or when something feels light and floaty. "Just vibing 🫧" has a completely different energy than "just vibing 😎" and I think bubbles win.

🫗 Pouring Liquid

Tea time. Gossip incoming. Spilling the beans. This emoji does all the heavy lifting that the tea emoji used to do, but with more drama. The liquid is actively pouring — things are happening.

🦕 Sauropod (Dinosaur)

The long-neck dinosaur is just cute. No other justification needed. Some people use 🦖 (the T-Rex), but the sauropod is gentler, friendlier, and honestly more lovable. Send it to confuse people. Chaos is fun.

How to Actually Start Using These

Here is my advice: pick three from this list and commit to using them for a week. Add them to your frequently used emojis. You will be surprised how quickly they become part of your vocabulary.

The goal is not to use obscure emojis for the sake of being different. It is about finding the ones that actually match what you are trying to say better than the defaults. And honestly? A well-placed 🗿 or 🫠 communicates more than a paragraph of text sometimes.
