Greek Mythology: Poseidon's Trident

In Greek mythology, the trident belongs to Poseidon, god of the sea. According to legend, the Cyclopes forged the trident during the Titanomachy (the war between the Olympian gods and the Titans). With it, Poseidon could stir up massive storms, create earthquakes by striking the ground, and summon or calm sea creatures.

The Romans adopted Poseidon as Neptune, keeping the trident as his symbol. To this day, the trident appears on maritime flags, naval insignia, and sea-related emblems worldwide. Ukraine's national coat of arms features a trident (the Tryzub), one of the oldest national symbols in Europe.

Hinduism: Shiva's Trishula

In Hinduism, the trishula (trident) is the weapon of Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities. The three prongs represent the three fundamental aspects of existence:

The trishula also represents the three gunas (qualities of nature): sattva (harmony), rajas (activity), and tamas (inertia). Shiva's trident symbolizes his authority over all three, making him the master of cosmic balance.

Buddhism: The Dharma Wheel

The Wheel of Dharma (☸) sometimes resembles a trident when depicted with three spokes. The three spokes can represent the Three Jewels of Buddhism: the Buddha, the Dharma (teachings), and the Sangha (community). The trident shape also appears in the triratna symbol, an ancient Buddhist emblem.
