The History of the Smiley Face

The smiley face as we know it — that simple yellow circle with two dot eyes and an arc mouth — was created in 1963 by graphic designer Harvey Ball. He was hired by an insurance company in Worcester, Massachusetts to create a morale-boosting image for employees. Ball designed it in about ten minutes and was paid $45. He never trademarked it.

In the 1970s, brothers Bernard and Murray Spain trademarked the smiley face with the phrase "Have a Happy Day" and put it on everything — buttons, posters, mugs. By the end of the decade, they had sold over 50 million smiley face buttons.

The digital smiley arrived in 1982 when computer scientist Scott Fahlman proposed using :-) and :-( on Carnegie Mellon University's bulletin board system to distinguish jokes from serious posts. That simple suggestion birthed the entire culture of emoticons, which eventually evolved into the emoji system we use today.
