What Are Dingbats?

Dingbats are typographical ornaments and decorative symbols that originated in the printing industry. In typography, dingbats were used as space fillers, list markers, and decorative elements. Unicode preserves these as the Dingbats block (U+2700–U+27BF), containing 192 symbols.

The most famous Dingbats font is Zapf Dingbats, created by Hermann Zapf in 1978, which inspired the Unicode block. Wingdings (from Microsoft) is a similar but distinct symbol font.
