All 12 chess piece symbols live in the Unicode "Miscellaneous Symbols" block (U+2600-U+26FF). They were added in Unicode 1.1 (1993) — making them among the older symbol additions to the standard.

The white pieces (U+2654-U+2659) have hollow outlines, while the black pieces (U+265A-U+265F) are filled solid. Depending on the font, the visual difference between white and black pieces can be quite prominent or subtle.

Chess Notation with Unicode Symbols

Figurine algebraic notation uses chess symbols instead of letters for piece names. Instead of "Nf3," you write ♘f3. This makes chess notation language-neutral — the symbols mean the same thing regardless of whether you speak English, Spanish, Russian, or any other language.

Standard algebraic notation uses letters based on language (N=Knight in English, C=Cavallo in Italian). Figurine notation is universal.
